Warm days alternate with colder ones this spring. Fluctuations in weather can affect the hormones that regulate the thyroid. Take good care of your thyroid and bring your hormones into balance with Hormone Yoga!
The thyroid gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and hormone production in the body. Hormonal imbalances — such as an underactive or overactive thyroid — can lead to various health issues. Hormone Yoga aims to stimulate and balance the thyroid through specific yoga postures, visualization techniques, energy locks, and breathing exercises.
One particularly important breathing technique used in the series is Ujjayi breathing. This is a deep breathing method where both inhalation and exhalation occur through the nose, while the throat is subtly constricted to create a soft, ocean-like sound. This breathing technique helps slow down and deepen the breath, calming the nervous system and enhancing focus. Ujjayi breathing is also known as "Victorious Breath". The word ujjayi comes from Sanskrit and means “victorious” or “triumphant.”
Basic steps to practice Ujjayi breathing:
Sit in a comfortable seated position with a straight spine and relaxed shoulders.
Inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your belly and ribs to expand.
As you exhale, gently constrict the back of your throat to create a soft hissing or whispering sound — as if you were trying to fog up a mirror with your breath.
Try to make your inhalations and exhalations equal in length, with a smooth and steady breath flow.
Continue this breathing technique for a set period, for example during your yoga practice or meditation session.
Ujjayi breathing is often used to calm the mind, improve concentration, and promote a sense of relaxation. It can also help regulate energy flow in the body and deepen the breath.
Ujjayi breathing is considered a safe and effective technique. It may help reduce stress, enhance mental focus, and foster a feeling of inner peace. However, it’s always important to listen to your own body and adjust the technique according to your personal needs and limits.
